About Granite

What is Granite?

Granite is an elegant natural stone which has a huge range of colours and patterns. It is bacteria, scratch and heat resistant rock which needs minimal maintenance and easy to clean.
Each piece of granite displays color variations inherent in natural stone. It is difficult to reproduce the actual color and depth of granite on the printed page.

What are the main characteristics of granite?

One of the most durable surfaces you can get
Heat and scratch Resistant
Easy to clean and low maintenance
Bacteria, mould and mildew resistant .

What are the DO's and DON'Ts of Granite?

DO clean up spills immediately to minimize damage to your stone.
DO use trivets or mats under hot dishes and cookware.
DO use place mats under china, ceramics, silver and other objects that can
                 scratch your stone's surface.
DO use coasters under glasses, especially if they contain alcohol or citrus juices.

DON'T wait to clean up spills on stone.
DON'T use  vinegar, lemon juice or other cleaners that contain acid such as
bathroom cleaners, grout cleaners  or tub & tile cleaners on your stone.
DON'T use  bleach,ammonia or other general-purpose cleaners.
DON’T mix bleach and ammonia; this combination creates a toxic and lethal gas.
DON'T ever mix chemicals together unless directions specifically instruct you to do                           so.
DON'T use abrasive cleaners such as dry cleansers or soft cleansers.
DON'T use alkaline cleaners not specifically formulated for stone.

**  A further consideration is not to use electric frying pans directly on the granite, even though it is heat  resistant, as they may cause thermal shock & cause your granite to crack  or open up ,due to heat being used for a long period of time on one area ,not giving the stone time to disperse it.
Also, never place extremely hot items such as roast trays or saucepans on stone surfaces as this may cause thermal shock and thus result in the stone cracking.
(This has even occurred in rare situations on extremely hot days with direct sunlight.)

**  Standing or sitting on the granite is not recommended , especially near sink and hotplate cutouts as too much weight on one area only ,may cause the granite to crack. Stone benchtops will not spontaneously crack unless a force of some sort is applied and almost always any cracking ever occurring is for reasons as outlined above.
Tito's Granite Warehouse will not take responsibility for benchtops resulting in cracks.

What’s the difference between marble and granite?

Although both stones are quarried from the earth, granite and marble (and  limestone, onyx and travertine) are very different from each other. Granite is formed deep in the earth’s mantle at extremely high temperatures, and is a very hard, resistant stone made of crystallized minerals.
The marble family – limestone, travertine, marble, onyx – starts out as sediment – animal skeletons and shells, plant matter, silt – at the bottom of bodies of water. After millions of years this solidifies (lithifies) into stone. Because its main component is calcium, it can be affected by acids such as vinegar and citrus beverages.

Handy Hints for care of your stone bench top

The two most important things that you can do to care for granite countertops, stone flooring, or any natural stone surface are :

1. Remove any dust, grit, and sand from the stone's surface.

2. Clean up accidental spills as soon as possible.

Some natural stones are very absorbent and can change colour when in contact with lemon juice, oil and other liquids, so if you are cooking with or using lemon juice, orange juice or malt vinegar, wipe it off your bench top immediately.

** These are acids that will eat through the waterproof sealant, leaving the bench top with no protection against stains.
Even though your granite top has been sealed, when products such as oils are left on the granite for an extended period of time the oil will bypass the sealer and enter into the granite.

Wipe up any spills as soon as possible. If left unattended, the spills can etch the polish and dull the finish of the stone. Beverages such as coke and orange juice contain acidic materials that when in contact with calcium based stones (marble, limestone, travertine, and onyx) can deteriorate the stone. This doesn't burn a hole through your stone , it just loses its finish in the area of contact.

For cleaning, the best product to use is Pure Methylated spirits and or a mix of
50% Methylated spirit and 50% water ,or warm soapy water used with a cloth.

If you use glass cleaner to clean your bench top or normal spray and wipe, it
should be without lemon or orange scent, and preferably with a neutral pH
          balance.

Do not use harsh cleaning chemicals such as Jif, Ajax or other commercial
cleaners, as these can scratch the surface and remove the sealant, reducing or
          removing protection from stains.

Daily spot cleaning is simply wiping up any accidental spills promptly. If you do get
a stain, attend to it as soon as possible with a slightly stronger solution of
detergent and then a poultice if the detergent cleaner is unsuccessful.

Daily cleanings should be accompanied by periodic deep cleanings.

For best results, apply the sealant once a year. A bottle of sealant can be
          purchased from Titos Granite Warehouse.

*Use coasters or placemats on your natural stone surfaces. This is especially true for calcareous natural stones such as marble, onyx, and travertine.                                                *Rinse & dry your natural stone surface after washing. This is very effective on dark stone to get rid of streaks.                                                                                                                    *Miracle cloths are very effective for drying your darker stone to a streak free finish.
